Brief history of the Shawnee Indian Mission State Historic Site
The Shawnee Mission and Indian Manual Labor School operated from 1839-1862 and was one of the earliest and longest-lived of such institutions in the Louisiana Purchase Territory. The first territorial governor of Kansas had his offices at the Mission, and the first territorial legislature met there in 1854. Today the Shawnee Indian Mission State Historic Site is situated on twelve of the original 2,000 plus acres that originally comprised the site. The site was designated a National Historic Landmark, and listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1968.
